Methods/Techniques of Bauxite Beneficiation
The main techniques of this process are ore washing, chemical beneficiation, magnetic separation, and floatation.
1. Ore Washing
It is the simplest yet highly effective way to enhance the aluminum-silicon ratio of this mineral. The ratio is usually increased by two times with ore washing. This technique is useful for separating loose ore from the impurities.
2. Floatation
Another technique involved in this process is floatation. It is useful for separating kaolinite and diaspore in an alkaline medium using tall oil and oxidized paraffin wax soap as collectors.
Other than beneficiating Bauxite, this technique is used for separating non-metals like talc and fluorite. It is a simple procedure performed using a floatation machine to deliver high-quality results.
3. Magnetic Separation
Beneficiation of Bauxite using a magnetic separator aims to eliminate iron from the ore. It is practiced on a small scale, mainly in refractory and abrasive industries.
Usually, the mineral is calcined or dried before magnetic separation as the heating transforms siderite to magnetite, leaving a magnetic residue. The process is useful for removing hematite and other magnetic substances that hold a strong magnetic nature.

4. Chemical Beneficiation
It is mainly concerned with roasting desalinization based on the reality that the minerals containing silicon hold a hydrous nature. The ore is first roasted and then converted into amorphous silicon oxide particles soluble in alkali. It increases the aluminum-silicon ratio and makes the ore suitable for further processing.
Generally, the technique used to beneficiate Bauxite depends on the type of ore you want to beneficiate. Like the gibbsite-kaolinite, Bauxite contains sand and mud as impurities. Hence, they are first grind coarsely and then separated using magnetic separation to eliminate iron. The slime is then purified further using floatation. The agent used in the floatation process is prepared with engine oil, tall oil, and oleic acid in a composition of 1:1:1.
The Bauxite floatation grade contains 49.66% alumina with a recovery rate of 45.3%. The floatation technique is more effective for beneficiation of high-silicon bauxite. The mineral collectors contain sulfonates and fatty acids, while the regulators contain sodium hexametaphosphate, sodium pyrophosphate, sodium carbonate, and tannic acid.
